Nov 22, 2011 Hi Peter, I’m desperately trying to open an.mdb file on my mac. In following your instructions after opening up the odbc manager, then clicking on “System DSN” and clicking “add”, the window asks me to choose from the following drivers: Actual Access, Actual Open Source Databases, Actual Oracle, Actual SQL Server. Run Microsoft Access under Crossover, export your data, and import it in a database like Bento or FileMaker. Crossover is a 95% Windows replacement (requires a Mac with an Intel processor), and it partly runs MS Access; Open Office is working on importing Microsoft Access, but this is not yet completed. Experimenting with this solution will.

Office 365 ProPlus is being renamed to Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise. For more information about this change, read this blog post.

Symptoms

When you try to open a Microsoft Access database, you receive the following error message:

'The database you are trying to open requires a newer version of Microsoft Access' when opening an Access database.'

Cause

This issue occurs if you try to open a database that contains a table that uses the BigInt data type. BigInt support was added to Access 2016. BigInt appears within the table's data type as Large Number.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, determine whether the use of BigInt is required. If so, update users to Access 2016 version 16.0.7xxx.xxxx or later. Alternatively, change the data type from Large Number to just Number.

Note

Create a backup of your database before you change the data type. If there is Large Number data in a column when you change the data type to Number, you receive a 'Microsoft Access encountered errors while converting the data' dialog box. If you click Yes to proceed, the records that contain large numbers are deleted.

More Information

The use of a Large Number data type sets the file format to version 16.7. You can determine a database's file format version by pressing Ctrl-G to open the Immediate window. Type ?Application.CurrentDB.Version in the window, and then press Enter.

However - if you have a database which you wish to continue to use as a database for your data there are 4 main roads totake.

  1. Use MDB / ACCDB Viewer to view and export properly from the databases. Available in the Mac App Store
  2. Use Microsoft Access under Windows which you install alongside Mac OS on your Mac. This will give you full compatibility. Unfortunately it is also expensive and time consuming to install and keep Windows running, up to date and virus free, unless you happen to know Windows well.
  3. Use a PC running Microsoft Access on Windows to export the database as CSV files. Then import those CSV files in either Bento (for simple databases) or FileMaker Pro (for advanced databases). This also requires work, mainly learning a new database application and cleaning up data.
  4. Run Microsoft Access under Crossover, export your data, and import it in a database like Bento or FileMaker. Crossover is a 95% Windows replacement (requires a Mac with an Intel processor), and it partly runs MS Access
